Endgame,
completed in 1958, followed the huge success of Waiting for Godot
and once again placed Beckett in the spotlight for its extreme subject
matter.
A
master and a servant are trapped in a room, both disabled and both believing
they are the sole survivors of a terrible apocalyptic event. Endgame
is a direct reference to the game of chess and the final stage of a
failed game where two Kings are left on the chess board and neither
is able to trap the other in a checkmate and win.
In
Godot the tension is whether a character will ever arrive, in Endgame
the audience wonders if one will ever leave.
The
Sydney Theatre Company's Resident Director Benedict
Andrews will stage Beckett's Endgame during the 2003 Sydney
Festival as part of STC's Wharf 2 Blueprints season. The Wharf 2 venue
will be dramatically refigured specifically for this production, restricting
the audience to a smaller, more intimate capacity.
