Sydney Festival has secured the exclusive world rights for the 50th anniversary production of Waiting for Godot, which opened at the Théâtre de Babylone on January 5, 1953. Accordingly, the Festival and Company B Belvoir will present this landmark work featuring John Gaden and Max Cullen, to be directed by Neil Armfield, at Belvoir Street Theatre.

Written by Beckett in 1948 in French, Waiting for Godot changed the very nature of post modernist theatre forever and firmly established him as one of the most important writers of our time.

Alone on a country roadside next to an empty tree, Estragon and Vladimir, two seemingly homeless men, wait for someone - or something - named Godot as they inhabit a drama spun from their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense, which is often interpreted as a summation of mankind's inexhaustible search for meaning.

Through one of the country's most fruitful artistic partnerships, Neil Armfield and Company B Belvoir will bring to life one of the magical fables of our time.
