The
Samuel Beckett Symposium will feature several exciting theatrical productions
of Beckett plays and other plays inspired and influenced by him, including
new works directed by Australian directors.
Beckett's
two greatest plays - Waiting for Godot
and Endgame will be staged by Sydney
Theatre Company and Company B Belvoir as part of the 2003 Sydney
Festival, Sydney's annual arts festival.
Sydney
Festival has also negotiated the rights to screen the Australian premiere
of Beckett on
Film - the extraordinary film series of the full canon of 19 plays,
initiated by the Gate Theatre in Ireland three years ago, and directed,
on location and in studios, by a raft of the world's finest film directors
including Anthony Minghella, Richard Eyre, Atom Egoyan, Conor McPherson,
Katie Mitchell, Neil Jordan, Karel Reisz, David Mamet and visual artist
Damien Hirst. The venue for this astounding cinematic event will be the
historic and iconic State Theatre.
Beckett
on Vinyl, an innovative interpretation of WATT by Australian playwright
Clara Mason, will be presented at the historic Mortuary Station in Regent
St in conjunction with the Symposium.
