Disability Employment Network (DEN) Services

Disability Employment Network (DEN) services assist people with disabilities to get and keep a job. They are also available to assist employers to employ people with disabilities, including recruitment services, advice on making appropriate workplace adjustments and ongoing support.

There are over 220 services nationally, all of which are funded by the Federal Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR).

What do Disability Employment Network Services Provide for an Employer?

Disability Employment Network (DEN) services are available for you as an employer who wishes to employ a person with a disability or is currently employing a person with a disability. You may choose to obtain the services of a DEN to:

  • work with you to discuss and identify your employment requirements
  • identify and screen suitable applicants with a disability to match specific requirements of the job
  • provide assistance in developing the job interview process
  • Identify and implement any required workplace adjustments
  • provide job training for the employee with a disability
  • assist in obtaining and administering any relevant employer incentive funding
  • provide follow up support and assistance, both to the employer and employee
  • provide any training requested eg disability awareness training
  • provide information specific to workplace relations and other human resource management issues.

Thomas McDonald, Bakery Assistant

Thomas is a bakery assistant at Woolworths. He has a learning disability. He gained the job with the support of Job Support (Disability Employment Network Service). Thomas began at Woolworths as a work experience student and did so well that he is now a permanent staff member.

His boss, Sam, says he is a great worker, very productive, punctual, gets on well with other workers and is always reliable.

Thomas is also studying Hospitality (cooking) at TAFE.

What do Disability Employment Network Services Provide for a Person with a Disability?

Disability Employment Network (DEN) services provide a range of services and support based on individual needs and requirements. Services and support for a person with a disability may include:

  • pre-employment preparation eg interview techniques, resume work, vocational training opportunities, job seeking skills
  • assistance in marketing for prospective positions of employment based on individual skills, interests and vocational goals
  • on-the-job training for an agreed period of time. This may include:
    • providing assistance in negotiating and implementing work place adjustments and/or flexible work arrangements,
    • providing and/or implementing adaptive technology in the workplace,
    • providing specific training to achieve the job requirements and
    • assistance in developing work related support structures.
  • support outside the workplace for confidential, supportive assistance, advice and/or information
  • ongoing training and support. Training and support can be re-introduced at any time at the individuals' request; for example if the nature of the job changes, opportunity for career advancement or specific issues arise related to the workplace.

Employer Access to the National Disability Recruitment Coordinator

If you would like to advertise your positions of employment to attract applicants who have a disability, the National Disability Recruitment Coordinator can assist you.

The National Disability Recruitment Coordinator provides a single point for the contact and recruitment of employees with disability. The Coordinator is also able to link you with Disability Employment Network services and Vocational Rehabilitation services to assist you establish a working relationship with them.

The National Disability Recruitment Coordinator works with you as an employer to:

  • match suitable job seekers to vacant positions
  • broadcast vacancies and provide a screening service of potential candidates
  • provide you with up-to-date information for the recruitment of people with disability and any related issues
  • promote the employment of people with disability.

Once you have decided which of the job seekers you would like to interview, the National Disability Recruitment Coordinator:

  • contacts and arranges your interviews with the applicant and relevant Disability Employment Network service or Vocational Rehabilitation Service
  • notifies any applicants you have decided not to interview.

Following the interviews, the National Disability Recruitment Coordinator contacts you to discuss the results of the interview and to gain any feedback you may have on the recruitment process.
