Tip 1 - Get ready early
- Start planning for transition from school as early as possible.
- Encourage your young person to start thinking about what they would like to do after school, and how to achieve this, around age 14-15.
- Would they like to do further study at TAFE, university or through a community or private training organisation?
- What about an apprenticeship or traineeship?
- Part or full time employment?
- Volunteering?
- Or a combination of these?
- The better planned the move from school is, the more positive and less stressful the experience will be – for everyone!
- Successful transitions lead to better outcomes, greater success and higher levels of participation after school.
- It is important to think about the types of support your young person might need after school - see Tip 2.
- Encourage making contact with support people early – this will ensure there is plenty of time to organise any help or supports that may be needed at TAFE, university or work. See Tip 7 - Get support for more information about the types of people to contact.
