Tip 3 – Get connected
- Help your young person made contact with people who can help their transition – start by connecting with relevant people at school:
- Careers adviser
- Counsellor
- Year adviser
- These people can also help young people link in with other specialist teachers if necessary, for example:
- Transition teachers – may be called Support Teachers (Transition) or Transition Officers
- Support Teachers
- Head Teachers Welfare
- Make links with disability staff at post-school settings your young person is considering, for example disability services are available at TAFE and university, and Disability Employment Network providers can help job-seekers. It is important to make these connections early, and it is best that your young person make the contact themself.
- Make contact with your local NDCO if you need further help or information. They can help you to make useful links with support.
- Support your young person to keep a record of the names and contact details of people who have been helpful – as they may be useful contacts in the future.
- Encourage your young person to talk with you, your family, friends, and other people with disabilities about their experiences after school and about help that is available.
