Tip 4 - Get to know your options
- Encourage your young person to research, ask questions and speak to people about different post-school options.
- What occupation would they like to work towards? Have them research careers they are interested in and find out:
- Is there training required? If so what level?
- Would they need to study at university?
- TAFE?
- Get an apprenticeship or traineeship?
- Seek work experience or paid employment?
- Are there different ways to reach the same, or similar, long term career goals?
- What are the requirements of each option in the short and long term?
- Is the chosen pathway/s realistic?
- Will the long term career/s they are working towards be realistic in the future?
- Explore online resources with your young person. Some websites that many young people find useful include:
- Year 12 - what next? - an Australian Government resource to help students plan for post-school education, training and work
- My Future - an Australian Government Initiative providing lots of useful activities to help people explore their career options
- Job Guide - an Australian Government site providing profiles of hundreds of different jobs
- Career moves - a website providing tips and resources to help people with disabilities or medical conditions to explore their interests and career options
- Get ready for uni - an information kit for people with disabilities considering going to university
- Support them to ask for information and advice. Discuss career options and ideas with them, and suggest they also talk with other family members, friends, people at school and other people with disabilities.
- It is important that young people find out about support that is likely to be available to them in different settings.
- Will they be able to get the help they need?
- See Tips 2 and 7 for suggestions on who can help find these things out.
