Every TAFE NSW Institute provides free career and education counselling services for all students at TAFE and those that are thinking about going to TAFE. If you are a TAFE student with a disability who is contemplating your career pathway or you are about to complete your studies and start to look for work, then the TAFE NSW Counselling and Careers Service may be of assistance to you.

Career Planning and Job Seeking

The TAFE NSW Counselling and Career Service may be of assistance to you if you need advice, support and guidance when considering your employment options. This may occur whilst you are studying or when you are about to complete your studies and start looking for work. The services they provide specific to career planning and job seeking include:

• looking at your career choices, or developing or changing them to suit your needs
• working with you to identify your career goals
• assessing your skills, qualifications and experience to help you with job seeking activities
• providing workshops in areas such as communication skills, job seeking skills, interview techniques and stress management
• working with you to develop your resume and application writing skills
• assessing any unsuccessful job applications with you to support and guide you in the job seeking process
• referring you to any relevant employment training programs in the local area
• providing you with employment information, resources and websites
• providing advice about volunteer programs and work experience opportunities.

As well as providing a service to help you with job seeking skills, they are also available to assist students in areas such as:

• educational and course planning
• educational difficulties
• study skills development
• financial assistance schemes such as Youth Allowance
• personal problems concerning such things as relationships, health, sexuality, anxiety and depression
• referral to other services (such as legal, medical, accommodation or financial).

If you are a student with a disability who requires support in accessing employment opportunities, then the Disability Teacher Consultant and the Counselling and Careers Service at your TAFE Institute may be able to work together with you. Make an appointment with either the Disability Teacher Consultant or the Careers and Counselling Service and ask for a joint meeting to discuss your employment and disability specific needs.
